We are a small farm, with an area of 123 hectares located at the foot of the Serra da Mantiqueira São Paulo in the municipality of Santo Antônio do Jardim/SP – Brazil, 190 km from the capital.
This is where we produce all products with our KAYNÃ brand, such as Special Coffee, Cornmeal ground in a stone mill and Honey. In addition to these, we also produce bagged corn silage for animal feed and small livestock. We also receive tourists, to learn a little of our history and see live some of the countless sustainability actions that we practice in our daily lives.
(told by Jefferson Adorno)
Mr. Aldo and Mrs. Marlene, Jefferson’s parents, were born in farms, in the city of Pompéia / SP.
On the Pau Brasil farm, where mr. Aldo was born, grandpa Nenê planted a little of everything: rice, beans, potatoes, cotton and even coffee.
There, Grandpa Nenê himself built a school for children in the region. The teachers lived there during the week and Mr. Aldo prepared their food. That’s where mr. Aldo started to study.
Meanwhile, here at Fazenda Retiro Santo Antônio, the penultimate owner opened the Chapel of Santo Antônio. A relic that we have preserved with great care to this day.
And right after that, he started the stone mill we currently use to grind our Kaynã cornmeal.
Wedding of mr. Aldo and Mrs. Marlene in Pompéia, after 3 years of dating, which started in Santo Antônio festival.
Mr. Aldo made him and Marlene move to Curitiba / PR, where Jefferson was born, the second of three children. They lived in Curitiba until 1976, when they moved to São Paulo – SP.
Jefferson enters Mackenzie University, graduating in 1995. It doesn’t tell anyone, but he did electronic engineering. During this period of college her first child was born: Lucas, in 1993.
After working 43 years at the same bank, mr. Aldo retires and buys the Fazenda Retiro Santo Antônio. He and Mrs. Marlene started a great job to recover the farm, which was very degraded, but they continued to live in SP.
Between 1999 and 2000, three events convinced Jefferson to leave his good job in São Paulo and move to the farm: a lightning kidnapping, a trip to Machu Picchu and the movie «The Sixth Sense». Change of it occurred on 13 / June: Day of St. Anthony.
Since 2000 living on the farm, until 2004, Jefferson only cultivated shiitake mushrooms, while Mr. Aldo and mr. Luiz took care of the production of coffee and milk. In 2004 an infection exterminated all shiitake production and it was then that Jefferson began to help in the administration of the rest of the Farm, with Mr. Luiz as grandmaster.
Jefferson and Marianna started dating in 2004 and got married right here in the chapel of Santo Antônio. She is an agronomist, a professor at the Espírito Santo do Pinhal University Center and was also a producer of shiitake. Now understand why the shiitake in this story? As a result of this union came Mateus in 2008 and Clara in 2012.
After the unsuccessful attempt to transform coffee into organic, we started afforestation of coffee plantations and reforestation here at the Farm. By 2021, more than 9,000 native trees had been planted.
We received our first class for Environmental Education and to this day we have been planting a few hundred seeds every year. We receive free public schools and social projects in our region.
Due to the sustainable actions that had been carried out on the farm, Jefferson received the «Outstanding Coffee Grower in Brazil» award, this was the last time he wore a suit.
The farm is awarded the Rainforest Alliance international socio-environmental certification, which is very strict and respected, especially abroad.
After 56 years of hard work and teaching, Mr. Luiz Tozzini, our only and eternal administrator, decides to move to the city.
The Farm receives a new international socio-environmental certification, with strict controls on traceability and food safety.
Our Kaynã brand is born, at first naming only our special coffee. Kaynã was born in sustainable packaging and is being delivered by bike in greater São Paulo.
We launched our Kaynã cornmeal, ground in that stone mill installed here in 1955. We talked about it in 1955, remember?
1st group of visually impaired people we received for what we came to name Sensorial Tourism. Exciting!
Death of Mr. Aldo and Mr. Luiz, leaving behind many teachings, stories and values that we try to propagate until today.
After a lot of learning, we decided not to continue with Rainforest and UTZ certifications. We saw that what we were doing here was sustainable production and we needed to invest a lot of time in the rigorous and necessary controls required by the certifications, which prevented us from starting new projects. With the Covid-19 pandemic, we need to stop visiting tourists and almost all of our clients in São Paulo have closed their doors. In an attempt to reinvent ourselves, we started a humble virtual store and right at the beginning we started to neutralize the carbon emission generated in the deliveries made by Correios vehicles.
We took advantage of the period in which we interrupted tourism on the farm during the pandemic to build Toca do Kaynã, a space for sensory and gastronomic experiences, sustainable in construction and also in terms of accessibility. Come visit us!
